The Kuginuki crest is a large, old carpentry tool used to pull out large nails, utilizing the principle of leverage. It is also known as 'Senkin' or 'Manriki', and is said to have the power to attack and capture nine castles, making it a popular family crest for military auspiciousness. Not only was it used by daimyo and their samurai, but also by slaves and servants on their happi coats, although the reason for this is still unclear.
