Maria of Austria became Holy Roman Empress after the death of her father-in-law Ferdinand. Before that she and her husband Maximilian, who was also her cousin (a running theme in the Habsburgs) had been regents in Spain for her father Charles and her brother Philip. She had 16 children and died in Spain in 1603.
