Maori Kowhaiwhai Pattern. This traditional style design has been built up to form patch work like layers. The colours of are black, red and white. The Kowhaiwhai pattern is made up of koru, Māori for "loop", a spiral shape based on the shape unfurling silver fern frond, which symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace. Kowhaiwhai designs are traditionally used to decorate Maori wharenui (meeting houses).
