Man with Fox Goddess Kuniyoshi Fine Art Postcard
A man confronted with an apparition of the Fox goddess, by Japanese woodblock print artist and painter Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Colour woodblock print, c.1850
In Japanese folklore the Fox (kitsune) is a magical creature who can change himself into many different forms, including human form. Although some stories emphasize their ability to trick people, kitsune are wise and intelligent spirits that help people, playing a role similar to that of fairies in European folk tradition.
Utagawa Kuniyoshi (ca. 1797 - April 14, 1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting and belonged to the Utagawa school.
