About This Design

Mahjong Joker tile invitation

Mahjong Joker tile invitation

The picture is taken from a Mah-Jong set tile made from bone and bamboo (dovetailed together). The set was probably made in China between 1920 and 1940. The actual tile is quite small (measuring just 1.8cm x 2.5cm - 0.7" x 1") and, although the artists probably worked with magnifying glasses, inevitably there were brush strokes that went astray. My original photograph showed all this, but I spent a lot of time tidying up the image using a photo design tool – getting rid of mis-strokes and smudges, and copying brushstrokes to places in the engraving that had been missed out. You can find more information about this tile in the MahjongBritishRules collection called “Explanatory cards”.
