Magic Carpet Shows Its Colours Poster

In this display, four types of materials are shown; the rock itself, the soil in front of the rock, some soil on top of the rock which is brighter than the rest and some soil that has collected in small recesses on the rock face “spots”. The surface reflectivity of each position is measured as a function of wavelength and then plotted on the accompanying graph to the right. This process allows scientists to broadly assess the varying mineral compositions of the martian rocks and soils. This picture was taken on Sol 7, the 7th martian day since Spirit landed.
