Magdeburg, DDR, Magdeburg, Germany. Magdeburg is the capital of the German state Saxony-Anhalt. Magdeburg is situated on the Elbe River.
Buried in the city's cathedral is Otto I, the first Holy Roman Emperor and founder of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg. Magdeburg's version of German town law, known as Magdeburg rights, spread throughout Central and Eastern Europe. In the Late Middle Ages, Magdeburg was one of the largest and most prosperous German cities and an important member of the Hanseatic League. Otto von Guericke, famous for his experiments with the Magdeburg hemispheres, is one of the city's prominent sons.
From 1949 to 1990, Magdeburg was part of the German Democratic Republic. Magdeburg celebrated its 1,200th anniversary in 2005.
