Mackinac Island is an island and resort area in Lake Huron, at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac, between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. In the late 19th century, Mackinac Island became a popular tourist attraction and summer colony. Its crown jewel is the Grand Hotel, the world's largest summer hotel, which opened in 1887. The entire island is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It's known for its architectural styles, particularly Victorian, its fudge, and its ban on motorized vehicles. More than 80 percent of the island is preserved as Mackinac Island State Park.
