The City of London, often referred to simply as "The City" or "The Square Mile" due to its historical boundaries, stands as one of the world's foremost financial centres. It is the historic heart of London and, crucially, a distinct administrative and local government entity separate from the wider London boroughs. Historically established on trade, finance, and banking, The City's significance blossomed during the British Empire, and it successfully maintained its dominant position throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.
