Living History of Illinois and Chicago® Group. The year 1818 is the year of statehood and was adopted by the first Illinois General Assembly. The year 1868 represents the year the current seal was adopted. The first seal engraved was essentially a duplicate of the Great Seal of the United States. It was used until 1839, when it was re-cut. The seal designed in 1839 became the Second Great Seal.
