This painting depicts the moment Jesus enters Jerusalem, greeted by crowds laying down palm branches and cloaks, symbolizing his recognition as the Messiah. The composition is lively and dynamic, characteristic of Rubens’s mature Baroque style, with rich colours and expressive figures. The work was originally part of a triptych altarpiece commissioned in 1632 for the chapel of the Saint-Sacrement in the church of Saint Rombault in Mechelen, Belgium. It served as one of the predella panels, accompanying the central panel The Last Supper (now in Milan) and Le Lavement des pieds (The Washing of the Feet), also in Dijon.
