Il traite de la mutinerie du cuirassé Potemkine dans le port d’Odessa en 1905, de l’insurrection et de la répression qui s’ensuivirent dans la ville. Il est considéré comme l'un des plus grands films de propagande de tous les temps. Il est choisi, en 1958, comme le meilleur film de tous les temps par 117 critiques internationaux lors de l’exposition universelle de Bruxelles2. Le film est tombé dans le domaine public dans la plupart des pays du monde.
