Last Supper Poster

Peter Paul Rubens’s Last Supper was painted between 1630 and 1631 as part of an altarpiece commissioned by Catherine Lescuyer to commemorate her father. Originally created for the Church of St. Rombout (Rumbold) in Mechelen, the painting now resides in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan. The composition shows Jesus Christ at the centre, dressed in red with a yellow halo, holding a loaf of bread and a cup of wine, symbolizing the institution of the Eucharist. The twelve apostles are arranged on either side, with Judas prominently depicted in blue, turning away from the table and nervously holding his hand to his mouth, avoiding eye contact with the others. This portrayal emphasizes Judas’s betrayal.
