While Van Gogh was in the southern French city of Arles in 1888, he produced the artwork. It incorporates both formal and artistic components. In The Hague, Van Gogh constructed a special perspective frame that he used to paint perspective with precise lines and angles. Van Gogh's skilful use of colour to create a harmonious and lovely image shows that he was exposed to Japanese woodcut prints. He was reminded of his own Netherlands by the picture's drawbridge across a canal. He requested that a framed replica of one of the paintings be sent to a Dutch art dealer via his brother Theo.
