It is a double chain of 26 gorgeous coral atolls running through the Indian Ocean. Altogether the atolls of the Maldives comprise 1,194 low-lying islands dispersed over 90,000 square kilometres (35,000 square miles) of which a few hundred islands are inhabited, which leaves a lot to explore for any traveller to these beautiful shores.
