About This Design
Konoe Peony 18th century v e r.2 Tile
This design is based on the 'Konoe Peony' used in the 18th century, which was published on the back cover of 'Nihon Monsho Dai Zukan' by Shinjinbutsu Oraisha. I made it symmetrical with my own interpretation (Nov 9, 2015). Interestingly, 'Konoe Peony' is also featured in 'Nihon Monshogaku' by Yoriyoshi Numata, in the section on peony crests, and although it's a small photo less than 3cm in size and not very clear, it bears a strong resemblance to this copy.
The Konoe family's peony crest is said to have originated from the pattern on their ancestors' clothing around the 11th century. In ancient China, the peony was considered the 'king of flowers' (from 'Nihon Monsho Dai Zukan').
