For the most part, Kokopelli has been relegated to a position of the jovial, fun-loving flute player and ambassador of the Great American Southwest. Actually he is more than that. In fact, I would not be able to depict an "original" kokopelli without designating an "R" rating! Kokopelli was a Kachina (Katsina) of fertility - the Seed Bringer and Water Sprinkler (a reference to his male anatomy, early depictions of which were exaggerated and quite obvious!). He is associated with fertility, the male principal and physiology. He visits various communities impregnating young women who are drawn to the mesmerizing, melodious tones of his flute, much like Pan of Greek mythology. You might say that Kokopelli was the playboy of ancient beliefs.
