Kobuk Valley National Park USA Postcard

Located in northwest Alaska, 75 miles east of Kotzebue and entirely above the Arctic Circle, Kobuk Valley National Park is a massive, remote wilderness defined by two contrasting elements: the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes and the Kobuk River system. The dunes, the largest active Arctic dune field in North America, cover 25 square miles and rise to 100 feet, formed from glacial deposits and sculpted by wind. In dramatic contrast, the Kobuk River winds for 60 miles through the park, creating a lush corridor of boreal forest, or taiga, and open tundra, all set against the backdrop of the Baird and Waring Mountain ranges. This unique landscape is a critical migration route for the Western Arctic caribou herd, numbering nearly half a million, which traverses the dunes biannually, providing a spectacular wildlife event. The park is also rich in cultural history, notably at Onion Portage, where evidence of human activity dates back 10,000 years, chronicling a long connection to caribou hunting. Due to its extreme remoteness and lack of roads, access is primarily by small bush plane from Kotzebue, making it one of the least visited yet most pristine parks in the United States, offering an unparalleled backcountry experience.
