Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German painter and founder member of "Die Brucke" (the bridge) group of artists who wanted to form a bridge between historical and contemporary art. The founders were all architecture students between the ages of 21-26 and could be regarded as self-taught artists. Later members included Emil Nolde and Edvard Munch. They are acclaimed to be the founders of German expressionism. Kirchner worked with abstract forms and expressionist nature.
