King Boletus Mushroom on Unalaska Island Postcard

The king boletus mushroom has always been a part of the traditional foods of the Unangan people who are native to the Aleutian Islands. Boletus mushrooms grow all over Unalaska Island and they are a very large species of mushroom. Often the cap of the mushroom will reach 10 inches in diameter when it is fully opened. The mushrooms must be harvested while they are in the early stages of maturation or the slugs will get to them first along with a host of insect larvae.
