Keep Coolidge with Silen Cal Coolidge Postcard

Keep Coolidge with Silen Cal Coolidge Postcard

Calvin Coolidge, often known as "Silent Cal," was the 30th President of the United States, serving from 1923 to 1929. Born on July 4, 1872, in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, Coolidge hailed from a modest background. He began his political career in local Vermont government before serving as the Governor of Massachusetts. Coolidge's quiet and reserved demeanour earned him the nickname "Silent Cal," but he was known for his effective governance and fiscal conservatism. In 1923, he assumed the presidency after President Warren G. Harding's death, and he won the subsequent election in 1924. Coolidge's presidency was marked by economic prosperity, often referred to as the "Roaring Twenties." He advocated for limited government intervention in the economy, signed the Immigration Act of 1924, and presided over a period of reduced national debt. Coolidge chose not to seek re-election in 1928, and he retired from politics at the end of his term. He passed away on January 5, 1933. Coolidge's presidency is remembered for his minimalist approach to government, characterized by his famous statement, "The business of America is business." His leadership style was unassuming, yet he presided over an era of economic growth and relative peace. Coolidge's administration faced challenges, including the Teapot Dome scandal, but he remained popular throughout his presidency. His legacy continues to influence conservative political thought in the United States, particularly in his emphasis on limited government intervention and fiscal responsibility.
