John the Baptist Poster

Experience the profound melancholy and striking realism of Caravaggio’s John the Baptist (circa 1610), one of the artist’s late masterpieces housed in the Galleria Borghese, Rome. This Baroque painting depicts a youthful John the Baptist in a contemplative pose, seated against a dark background with a ram nibbling a vine nearby, symbolizing sacrifice and Christ’s future Passion. The vibrant red drapery envelops the saint’s pale, almost fragile figure, creating a dramatic contrast enhanced by Caravaggio’s masterful chiaroscuro. The work reflects Caravaggio’s mature style, blending naturalism with emotional depth, and is believed to have been created during his final years in Naples or Sicily. It was likely gifted to Cardinal Scipione Borghese as part of a papal pardon. This museum-quality print is ideal for art lovers and collectors seeking iconic Italian Baroque religious art and evocative spiritual imagery for their home or office.
