John C Calhoun, Vice President under Andrew Jackson in 1828. Calhoun was a firm believer in the sovereign rights of states. He was pro-slavery, He believed in nullification (the ability of states to declare unenforceable, any act of Congress believed to be unconstitutional.) and in a limited government. He was the first Vice President to be born after the American Revolution and was the first to resign from office. Although he died before the start of the American Civil War, he was an advocate of succession. He served in the House of Representatives from 1810 - 1817; the United States Senate from 1832 - 1843, was Secretary of War under James Monroe (1817 -1824) And served as Secretary of State under John Tyler (1844-1845)
