Japanese Guardian Lion Statue Postcard. Here is one of the two guardian lions found near the entrance of the Kiyomizu-dera temple in Japan. Carved from stone, these iconic lions are found all throughout the historical architectures of Japan. Kiyomizu-dera itself is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, and dates back to the year 798. It's current buildings were constructed in 1633 when a restoration was declared. Kiyomizu means clear water, or pure water, when translated. This name comes from the waterfall found within the temple grounds.
