Jane Avril Dancing by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, oil on cardboard c. 1892, is a painting of the famous French dancer and cabaret performer of late 19th century Paris, kicking her leg in the air on the dance floor. Lautrec paints the scene in rapidly applied, thin brush strokes of sharply drawn oil colours, creating a sketch-like composition that is like a drawing or caricature executed directly in oil paint on the brown cardboard ground.
