The Ivory Island lightstation, built in 1898, is west northwest of Bella Bella at the entrance to Milbanke Sound on Seaforth Channel. Ivory Island marks a major turning point for all traffic on the main route along the Inside Passage to northern BC and Alaska. Marine and aviation weather reports from the Ivory Island lightkeepers are crucial for commercial and recreational vessels in the potentially dangerous waters of the Inside Passage. Bella Bella, also known as Waglisla, is an unincorporated community and Indian Reserve community located within Bella Bella Indian Reserve No. 1 on the east coast of Campbell Island.
