Iolite is the blue gemstone variety of the mineral cordierite. This stone is a "rose cut" gemstone. A rose cut is basically a faceted cabochon. This beautiful blue specimen has a number of inclusions that make it very unique. Iolite was also once called "water-sapphire" because of it's violet/blue colour. Iolite is derives from the great "Ios" which means violet. The mineral is highly pleochroic and has 3 axis of colour. The blue/violet axis, a colourless axis, and a straw yellow axis.
