Heck, some nerd-ape probably made the world's first better pointed stick after sketching out a prototype on the cave wall. And whether you are attracted to physics or are repelled by applied physics, there's no denying that the development of implosion may well represent some awesome (in either sense of the word) pinnacle of war science. The technique has become de rigueur in modern weapons; it permits smallification and increased yield, not to mention making possible the even-more-terrible hydrogen bomb.
