The small island of Ilha da Armona (Armona Island) is situated in the protected Ria Formosa nature reserve in the municipality of Olhao. Ilha da Armona is a far cry from the bustling resorts like Albufeira and is like stepping back in time to see the other side of life on the Algarve in Portugal. It is home to a few restaurants and holiday homes and boasts some wonderful beaches of fine white sands with one side of the island facing the Ria Formosa nature reserve and roughly a 20 minute walk to the other side of the island that faces the open ocean.
