This surimono New Year's card depicts a mystical Buddhist bird (karyōbinga in Japanese; kalavinca in Sanskrit) characterized by a bird's body and a human head. It is said that one can never tire of listening to the creature's heavenly music. The New Year's poems were inscribed by Nikyō and Kokusui.
Hokusai's signature reads Hokusai aratame Iitsu ("Hokusai changed to Iitsu"). The work is from the artist's very productive Iitsu period (ca. 1820–33).

This will be my favourite present to give so far this year, at Christmas! Bought one for mom, the other for grandma. These pillows exceeded my expectations!!! Came at a good time, high quality, nice and bright, and super plump & fluffy! Hurry up Christmas, so I can give these away! They're awesome. Plastic still on because I want to keep them protected until Christmas. I promise you, they look so much better in person, the pictures don't do it justice! :). Clear, big, and bright!
