Charles Edward Dixon HMS Nottingham French battleship Mars cape clear 1703
The Mars was a 64-gun, third-rate ship of the line in the French Navy. In 1746, the Mars was captured by HMS Nottingham off Cape Clear. Then was taken into Royal Navy service as HMS Mars. The Mars was wrecked in 1755 near Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Mars was named after Mars, the Roman god of war. The ship was captained by Philip Saumarez. The action between HMS Nottingham and the Mars occurred on October 11, 1746
