In spring 1666, Rev Mompesson delivered one of the most poignant, courageous and awe-inspiring sermons in British history.
Plague was in Eyam and people were dying. He persuaded the rest of the population to quarantine themselves within the village boundaries. They knowingly sacrificed themselves, and their families, in order to save the rest of Derbyshire.
A year later, only a quarter of the villagers were still alive. That sermon happened in this church.
