Hippos, or hippopotamuses, are massive, semi-aquatic mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa. One of the best places in the world to see hippos in their natural habitat is South Luangwa National Park in eastern Zambia. This park is renowned for its rich biodiversity, with the Luangwa River serving as a lifeline for countless species, including a thriving population of hippos. Visitors to the park can often witness hundreds of hippos gathered in the river, grunting, yawning, and jostling for space in the cool water.
