What do you get when you cook two different quotations into a scrumptious portmanteau? The plural is quotemanteaux, in case you were curious. One quotemanteau, two quotemanteaux. Both words are pronounced the same – the silent "x" is a remnant of an archaic language called French, whose speakers could not pronounce that particular consonant. This particular quotemanteau is the one where tragedy meets comedy. Its ingredients are Shakespeare's famous "To be, or not to be, that is the question" and a fairly obscure Mark Twain quote, "The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter." Bake them into a pot pie, and before long you'll have a brand-new proverb from the legendary Hamlet Twain. What a treat!
