About This Design

Gustav Klimt - The Sunflower Tile

Gustav Klimt - The Sunflower Tile

The Sunflower (Sonnenblume), painted around 1907-1908 in oil on canvas by Austrian Symbolist Gustav Klimt. A single tall sunflower rises from a dense field of smaller flowers, occupying the centre of the square composition with the presence of a standing figure. Klimt emphasizes the plant's anthropomorphic shape, with drooping leaves resembling a flowing garment and the dark flower head acting almost like a face. Golden dots and richly patterned vegetation connect the work to the decorative language of his Golden Period. Among Klimt's landscapes, it is one of the clearest points of contact between his treatment of nature and his formal approach to portraiture.
