Gustav Klimt - Beech Grove I Tile

Gustav Klimt - Beech Grove I Tile

Beech Grove I, painted in 1902 in oil on canvas by Austrian Symbolist Gustav Klimt. Slender tree trunks rise vertically through the square picture while the forest floor is broken into countless touches of brown, green and violet. Rather than opening a deep vista, Klimt crops the woodland closely and minimizes sky and horizon, turning the grove into a layered pattern of trunks and leaf litter. The work belongs to a small series of Attersee forest paintings made in the early 1900s, based on woodland motifs near Litzlberg. Its quiet repetition of vertical forms gives the scene a meditative, almost timeless character.
