Ladybugs are well-known and well-loved the world over. With nearly 5,000 species worldwide and 500 species indigenous to North America, that a lot of love. What's not as well know is that ladybugs come in a wide variety of colours, including red, orange, pink, yellow and black. They can have up to 20 spots or none at all. In addition to their pest control, aphid-eating talents, there are LOTS of legends about the ladybuy, beginning with how it was named. The most enduring tale supposedly comes from the Middle Ages when swarms of insects were destroying crops. The farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary for help and ladybugs arrived, eating the pests, saving the crops. The farmers called the insects "The Beetles of Our Lady" which, overtime, became "ladybugs". The other stories, myths and superstitions include: many believe that a ladybug is lucky, but killing one can bring misfortune. The French believe that when a ladybug lands on you, any illness you have flies away with her. Even the number of spots on a visiting ladybug are said to be foretelling . . . if more than seven, it's a sign of pending famine, if less than seven a bountiful harvest is coming; the number of spots is also supposed to predict how many children one will have.
