Green-winged Teal Ducks, Unalaska Island Postcard

Green-winged teal ducks live on Unalaska Island all year long, with other teals coming in to winter over with their resident relatives. The green-winged teal is named for a feather on the wing which is bright green. In other species of teal it is a different colour. the male has a reddish brown head with a broad dark green stripe running along the sides. The female is plain by comparison. Teals are not large ducks, they look tiny next to seagulls and emperor geese. This teal duck couple was perched on a rock in the Illiuliuk River, which runs through the downtown area of the City of Unalaska, Alaska.
