At Ruiz’ death, legend suggests that Saint Stephen and Saint Augustine descended from heaven to bury the count in front of his astonished mourners. Above the burial scene, the painting features a dramatic depiction of heaven with swirling clouds framing Saint Peter, the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ and the extended heavenly host.
