Great Mosque of Djenné Mali Postcard

The Great Mosque of Djenné is the largest mud-brick building in the world and is considered by many architects to be the greatest achievement of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style. Located on the flood plain of the Bani River, the mosque's walls are reconstructed with sun-dried earth bricks and coated with plaster, giving it a monumental and organic appearance. Its most striking features are the 'toron'—wooden beams that project from the walls to serve as permanent scaffolding for the annual replastering festival. The current structure dates back to 1907, though the site has been home to previous mosques since the 13th century.
