I took this photo during a walk in the forest in early October. Many leaves have changed from green to golden yellow, orange and red. It won't be long before they all change colour and fall to the ground, or dance away on the breeze, leaving bare branches. The colour change in trees in autumn happens when the cooler weather comes, and the trees stop producing chlorophyll, which is responsible for the lush green of summer. It's a time of fleeting beauty as the brilliant warm fall colours emerge, lasting only a couple of weeks or so. Then you can rake up the leaves and jump in the leaf piles. Fun! Soon the winter winds will blow from the north, bringing the snow, but now it's a time of harvest and celebration. It's a beautiful sunny day and the forest is vibrant with the song of life. Little creatures get fat the abundance of fruit and seeds. Birds like geese start to migrate and winter birds arrive. The aroma of autumn-blooming wildlfowers, such as aster and sweet goldenrod, mingle with the moist scent of forest earth. Chipmunks, squirrels and chickadees stash seeds and nuts. Some won't be found and will grow into seedlings in spring. The forest is alive with the song of life.
