GOLD MINING by HYDRAULICS c. 1889 - S. DAKOTA Poster

Three gold miners in rubber hip boots mine for gold around 1889 near Rockerville, South Dakota. Hydraulic Mining got its start in California around 1853 when miners discovered the more gold-bearing gravel they moved the more money they made. Water under high pressure is forced through a gun called a 'monitor' and shot at paleo-gravel deposits which are washed downhill into giant sluice boxes where the gold is captured. Although lucrative, it is highly devastating to the environment as demonstrated in Clint Eastwoods movie Pale Rider. Based upon a photograph taken by John C. Grabill.
