Goddess Turning the Wheel of Fortune (Burne-Jones) Tile

Goddess Turning the Wheel of Fortune (Burne-Jones) Tile

This design features a painting by the British Pre-Raphaelite artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833–1898). It depicts the concept from Medieval philosophy known as the Wheel of Fortune (in Latin, "Rota Fortunae"), which symbolizes the capricious nature of Fate and its effect on human lives. The wheel belongs to the goddess Fortuna (or Tyche) who spins it at random, changing the positions of those on the wheel: some suffer great misfortune and others gain great windfalls. Male figures are depicted here, as Fortuna turns the Wheel of Fortune and determines the course of their lives. The Wheel of Fortune is similar to that used in watermills. The original artwork was painted by Edward Burne-Jones between 1875 and 1883.
