It is used to shape the raw copper and to put the little dents you see into the copper. Before hitting the copper with the hammer, it is soft and flexible, but as the copper is hammered into shape, it crystalizes and hardens up. After a lot of shaping and hammering, your final product is a beautifully shaped and reflective beautiful copper sculpture or bowl.
