Glenmont Estate Home of Thomas Edison New Jersey Postcard

This postcard features Glenmont , home of Thomas Edison. It is located in the exclusive Llewellyn Park section of West Orange, about a mile from his famous laboratories. Known as Glenmont, the estate, which sits on about 15 acres, was reopened to the public last month after a three-year, $1 million restoration by the National Park Service, which administers the property. Henry Pedder a secretary for the Arnold Constable Company in NYC, had stolen funds from the company (approximately $300K) to build the mansion known as Glenmont. In 1884 he was jailed for his crime and the company sold the house fully furnished to Mr. Edison for $125,000, including all acreage and outlying buildings. Edison was a 39 year old widower with three children and married Mina Miller. He gave his new bride this 29-room Queen Anne-style home as a wedding gift.
