The RMS Titanic was a British luxury passenger liner that sank on April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. Of the approximately 2,240 passengers and crew on board, more than 1,500 lost their lives, making it one of the deadliest maritime disasters in history. The Titanic was touted as "unsinkable" due to its advanced safety features, but the tragedy highlighted the limitations of maritime safety at the time.
