Gion Japan Postcard

Gion is Kyoto's most famous geisha district, situated around Shijo Avenue between Yasaka Shrine and the Kamo River. Known for its traditional wooden machiya townhouses, lantern-lit streets, and exclusive ochaya (tea houses), Gion offers a glimpse into old Japan. While geisha and maiko (apprentice geisha) can sometimes be spotted, especially in the evening, visitors should be respectful and avoid interrupting them. The district is also home to numerous shrines, temples, and theatres, including the Minamiza Kabuki Theatre. Exploring Gion involves wandering its charming alleys, such as Hanami-koji, lined with traditional restaurants and boutiques. The area comes alive during the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's biggest festivals, held annually in July. Yasaka Shrine, located at the eastern end of Gion, is a central landmark. Visitors can enjoy traditional tea ceremonies, kaiseki dining, and cultural performances in and around the district. Kyoto itself, the former imperial capital, is rich in history, temples like Kinkaku-ji and Fushimi Inari-taisha, and stunning gardens, offering endless opportunities for cultural exploration.
