Robert Oppenheimer was an enigma. A student of the pacifist ideals espoused in the Bhagavad-Gita who played a defining role in the creation of the most destructive weapons ever known. His leadership at Los Alamos has been universally credited with the success of the Manhattan project; a once-in-a-generation mind who understood equally the cutting-edge technical challenges of the work and the prima donna egos working in the cramped and isolated camp. After the bombs fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Oppenheimer became the tortured conscious of the nuclear age. He encouraged dialogue with the Soviets as an alternative to the massive stockpiling that eventually emerged while keeping his (brief) membership in a Communist party a secret. He opposed development of the hydrogen bomb while privately gushing that its physics were "technically sweet." After making the United States the most powerful nation on Earth, he was stripped of his security clearance in a sham trial that would have made Pravda blush.
