In a heart-shaped setting, nine mountain-sticks of Berchtesgaden separate Bavaria from the province of Salzburg. For mountain climbers, the Berchtesgaden Alps have a special appreciation: Despite the intense alpine and tourist tradition our mountains have preserved their intact and original mountain landscape. This has been guaranteed since 1978 by the Berchtesgaden National Park, which covers a large part of the Berchtesgaden Alps and preserves their originality. The Berchtesgaden Alps are divided into 9 mountain levels, 8 of which are directly surrounded by the Berchtesgadener Valley with the five municipalities of Ramsau, Schönau am Königsee, Berchtesgaden, Bischofsmeadow and Marktschellenberg. - Watzmann, Untersberg, Steinernes Meer, Hochkalter, Reiter Alm (Reiter Alpe), Göll, Hagengebirge, Lattengebirge. The Hochkönig is also one of the Berchtesgaden Alps, although it is completely situated in Austrian territory. The summit of the Hochkönig with its 2,941 meters height is the highest peak in the Berchtesgaden Alps. The Matrashaus on the high royal summit is therefore also the highest mountain hut in our mountains. Popular destinations for mountaineers and hikers in Berchtesgaden are also the southern mountains of the Chiemgau Alps: The high-rise massif with the Reichenhaller Haus and the Zwieselalm and the Sunday shorn.
