Georges Seurat - The Circus - Le Cirque French Post-Impessionist painter Georges Pierre Seurat painted The Circus (Le Cirque in French) in 1891. He originated the technique of painting with small dots of pure colour known as Pointillism, which you can readily see in this painting. Seurat studied the science of optics and the effects of mixing and juxtaposing colours. He developed his own theories, which are seen in his paintings. Calm is achieved through an equivalence/balance of the use of the light and the dark, by the balance of warm and cold colours, and by lines that are horizontal.
